Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) Surveys & Assessment

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is now a mandatory requirement for most development in England. The policy requires development to deliver a measurable increase in biodiversity, typically achieving at least a 10% net gain compared with the site's pre-existing ecological value.

Biodiversity Net Gain is assessed using the Defra biodiversity metric, which calculates biodiversity units based on habitat type, condition, distinctiveness, and extent.

Serotina Ecology provides specialist ecological input to support Biodiversity Net Gain throughout the planning process, from baseline habitat assessment through to habitat design and long-term management planning.

Surveys typically include

  • Baseline habitat surveys including UKHab classification and biodiversity metric condition assessment

  • Calculation of biodiversity units using the Defra biodiversity metric

  • Advice on delivering both onsite and offsite biodiversity

  • Preparation of supporting documentation for planning applications

Typical uses

  • Planning applications requiring Biodiversity Net Gain

  • Ecological input to Habitat Management and Monitoring Plans

  • Development of onsite or offsite biodiversity units
